Ahoy, me Hearties! Let me begin by wishing all Sea Dogs an’ Landlubbers alike a most jolly International Talk Like a Pirate Day!
A new category be added t’ th’ Sea Journal, ’tis called ”Non-Sequitur”, a phrase which I mightily plundered from me fellow wench, Fenraven! It used t’ be known as “Random Thought o’ th’ Tide (day)”; but I did nay be havin’ th’ good fortune o’ them occurin’ on a daily basis, and ‘t be too long t’ write! So I decided t’ adopt th’ shorter self-explanatory phrasin’. This be th’ place I be scribblin’ any mere tidbit I feel like expressin’ regardless o’ how inane or ridiculous. Ye best be enjoying ‘t or I`ll be havin’ t’ keel-haul ye!
Heroes Spoiler: The Great Waffle Conspiracy
Sep 16th
I almost forgot all about the whole waffles thing until I saw this over at Twitter: JamesProps#WaffleWednesday Don’t forget the Heroes Season Premiere Party @TheWaffleLA, 9/21! http://www.shopallaccess.co… Please RT!
Those “Heroes” writers (as well as apparently their props department) certainly have a waffle obsession. It is clearly evidenced on the show, as they are mentioned in 12 different episodes as well as once in the web-comic.
Greg Grunberg even divulged the cast & crew enjoying craft services waffles behind the scenes!
I myself am apparently an unsuspecting contributor in this conspiracy, having once prostituted personal information about myself for the sake of waffles on the newsgroup alt.1d.
But is there more to this waffle thing than just tasty breakfast treat? Some people seem to think so!
There are all sorts of rumors, some ranging from the mundane (the writers receive dividends from the “Waffle House” chain) to the fantabulous (waffles are part of a secret conspiracy to take over the world)… and everything in between, one of my most favorite being that waffles augment the powers of persons with enhanced abilities. Too bad this weren’t true, as I’m sure I have eaten enough waffles in my lifetime to at least inherit the possibility or either “gaydar” and/or “bullshit detector”. C’mon evolution, work with me here!
So what is #WaffleWednesday anyway? There seems to be some confusion as to who created it, and more importantly, why?
- Chief Waffle Officer (a.k.a. Gillian) claims to have come up with it sometime around 2006 (she posts on 2/2/07 that it came about “a year before” the post).
- The TypePad blog “Waffle Wednesday” posted it’s first article on 9/4/06.
- And even one unofficial source claims that it began as early as March 2005 in Ontario, Canada.
While I’m pretty sure the last article is a joke, it does seem likely that whomever created the idea of a Waffle Wednesday probably did so unintentionally, and thus did not have the foresight to notate it’s official date.
It is also plausible that Waffle Wednesday may have occurred serendipitously in time with either International Waffle Day (March 25th) or National (U.S.) Waffle Day (August 24th) to fall on a Wednesday.
Whatever the case may be, waffles somehow because the official breakfast food of Wednesdays, which seems ironic as I almost always make them on a Sunday when I’ve actually got the time. Attempting to procure waffles on a weekday(unless at a restaurant) just seems odd.. but maybe that’s just me.
In any case apparently to make it more confusing the official All-Access “Heroes” premiere party is being held at a place called “The Waffle” at the corner of Sunset & Vine in Hollywood. this is of course on a Monday.. not a Wednesday, and takes place between 6PM and 11PM. So, dinner not breakfast, not that there is anything wrong with eating breakfast foods for dinner. If you live over that way and have about $40 then you can totally make a reservation.
Of course none of this info ends up answering my initial question, as such I now officially dub this a non-blog (nlob) as nothing was truly gained by the reading of this post. However if you’d like more information regarding waffles and how it pertains to ‘Heroes” then I suggest you check out the Heroes Wiki “Waffle” page as well as the “Waffles Spoiler” page.
WRITERS NOTE: This may well be the last entry to “Shades of Gray” (a.k.a. :Heroes” Spoiler Blog). I do still watch the show – but I’ve just gotten too far behind on posts, and really no longer want to commit myself to daily or monthly blogs, because I write a lot better on the fly than when i have a “deadline”. Apologies if you were enjoying the column, and thanks for reading!
Heroes Spoiler: Season 4 Episode Preview “Orientation; Jump, Push, Fall”
Sep 16th
Season 4 of ”Heroes” premieres next Monday, September 21 (as you probably know). It’s a two hour premiere, which means that technically it is in fact two separate chapters. Chapter 1 – “Orientation” and Chapter 2 – “Jump, Push, Fall”. This preview is based solely on conjecture; based on casts lists for the episodes, a few interviews here and there (Greg Grunberg as always a font of unbridled spoileriffic material), and a couple of leaked photos, combined with theories I have formulated from previous episodes. As per usual.. don’t read these if you don’t want to know what might potentially happen on the show. I know I say this every time, but of course the one time I don’t someone will haphazardly read it and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who doesn’t want to know anything until after the show… so there you go – you have your chance to run to a spoiler-free zone! Go on, now! OK, for the rest of you – spoilers 3… 2… 1… NOW!
Episode #401 (Volume 5, Episode 1) “Orientation” and Episode #402 (Volume 5, Episode 2) “Jump, Push, Fall” – Based on the official NBC description of the episode released 8/27/09
Claire once again makes an attempt at normalcy. She attends college in Washington D.C., only to have her hopes quickly dashed with the unexpected suicide of her new roommate, Annie.
Hiro is potentially dying as hinted in the Season 3 finale. This is the source of his mysterious nosebleeds. With the help of Ando, he nobly decides to use his remaining time to do good deeds, mainly by finding other evolved humans and helping them discover, hone, and use their abilities for good.
“Angela fears that Nathan will discover his true identity (Sylar); while Matt is haunted by an unexpected visitor seeking what he is lost.” This all sounds very cryptic until you realize that it is promoted as one sentence. As previously discussed here: when Matt used his powers to create Nathan/Sylar some of Sylar’s essence transferred into him. From within, Sylar is able to manifest himself in Matt’s mind and uses this to communicate with him in an attempt to regain his body/power.
“The Company” is reformed by Angela & H.R.G. and Tracy joins. Tracy & H.R.G. investigate the motive behind a horrific murder. - My opinion on this depends on whom the murder victim is, as I do not currently know. As of now, my theory is that Tracy is in fact covering up her own vendetta murders. As again, you may recall from the end of Season 3; she materializes out of agent Harper’s overflowing sink, and then proceeds to freeze and kill him claiming him as “Number 4″. I believe this indicates that she is summarily working her way through former members of Building 26. She may join the company in an attempt to get further information of those members whereabouts. In addition it is possible by pretending to investigate murders that are actually hers, she would try to push suspicion off of her self.
Unfortunately this theory is flimsy at best. First of all why would “The Company’ be investigating murders of normal humans, unless it was obvious the murders were done by enhanced human ability. And then assuming it is obvious, why wouldn’t H.R.G. pick up on the fact that Tracy is a suspect (unless he is trying to trick Tracy into revealing herself)?
However if this theory is correct – Building 26 (known) employees still alive include H.R.G. himself, Bob (Danko’s former assistant), formerly unnamed Central Commander, Dan from Internal Affairs, Danko, Agent Donner (one of the agents Sylar frequently impersonated), Agent Taub (another agent Sylar frequently impersonated), Rachel Mills, and a handful of previously un-named agents and techs. Zeljko Ivanek (who plays Danko) is scheduled to guest in the premiere, but as far as I can tell none of the other (so far advertised) episodes. I wonder if he is in fact the murder victim?
“Peter uses his powers for good, but is soon called upon by an old friend” – I think it is important to note the phrasing “uses his powers for good, but” portion of the statement. Peter is notorious for meaning well, but then somehow accidentally become or aid the thing/person to be avoided. Therefore I am taking this as a very crafty hint from the writers, that once again Peter will attempt to “help” only to have things go awry.
“While the heroes adjust to their new surroundings, a mysterious carnival clan, led by ringleader Samuel, sets their sights on familiar faces.” – Again note the use of the term “familiar faces”. It may just be their way of making a blanket statement about familiar to us, the viewers, meaning our cast from the previous seasons. But is it? Perhaps the new character, Samuel, is familiar with some of the faces as well; esp. if he is in fact the “old friend” of Peter’s the above statement refers to. He would probably at least know of Peter, Nathan and Angela.
I initially got excited about this circus concept, hoping that it meant yet another return of Eric “The Puppet Master” Doyle. He has been getting some Graphic Novel/Webisode action during the off-season. However I follow David H. Lawrence XVII on Twitter, and as far as I can tell he has yet to make mention of filming any “Heroes” episodes yet. Then again, you never know he could be saving it as a surprise.
Other notes of interest based on the guest stars list :
- Ray Park – I would wager as a member of the carnival, given his acrobatic skills.
- Madeline Zima – as Gretchen. Gretchen is one of Claires new friends at college, and reportedly the girl-on-girl kiss that Hayden Panitierre alluded to a few months ago in an interview.
- Dawn Olivieri as Olivia the Tattooed Lady (yay song reference). Obviously, one of the other carnival members.
- Zachary Quinto – yes as a guest star! I know this is a total downer for fangirls (myself included), but it seems at least for these episodes Sylar is being played mainly by Adrian Pasdar as Nathan/Sylar. ZQ will likely only make appearances in memories and in Matt’s visions.
- Rachel Melvin as Annie. Claire’s roommate who commits suicide.
- Jimmy Jean-Louis as the Haitian. I assume as always, part of “The Company”. Probably helping out with H.R.G.s investigation.
- Ashley Crow as Sandra Bennett. H.R.G. and Sandra still have a messy divorce battle impending (as hinted somewhere that Claire divides her time between them this season). So we’ll probably still see her on occasion, no clue if she has any other role to play aside from Claire’s mom and caretaker of Mr. Muggles.
BTW – because I don’t think I mentioned it before – Mr. Muggles is an invincible dog. I think he inherited Claire’s power when he drank her blood. So far he has resisted a number of attacks, and also as apparent in potential future timeline Volume 3 (the same one where Gabriel has a son) apparently looks just as young and behaves just as spritely in the year 2011 as he does in year 2007 (4 years is a decent chunk of change in dog years) which is similar (as we know) to other people with rapid cellular regeneration (like Adam Monroe) whom never age. - Lisa Lackey as Janice Parkman. She’ll be around a bit more, now that Matt is aware he ha a son. Whether or not she and Matt actually reconcile remains to be seen.
- Assaf Cohen as Hesam. Hesamis one of Peter’s EMT/Paramedic coworkers. He lectured Peter once about Nathan (assumingly unaware of the existence of evolved humans) mistaking it for a more hardcore approach to the Patriot Act. In other words he thinks the government was hunting/rounding up immigrants and minorities. Reportedly he is of Iranian descent. Not sure where this plot-line may go, unless they revert all the way back to Season 1, unaired pilot episode and bring a terrorist faction back into the story.
- Saemi Nakamura as Kimiko Nakamura. Yeah, like me you probably forgot that Hiro even had an older sister, right? She took over Nakamura Industries when Kaito died, so that Hiro could concentrate on his other endeavors. So far she has not demonstrated any enhanced abilities.
What Happened to Social Networking?
Aug 10th
For those of you who keep track of me over at Twitter or Face Book; you’re probably wondering what the heck is going on over there?!
No I’m not leaving… what I’m working on is a bit of a revamp. Sure I suppose I could have left my old posts up; but what I wanted was a fresh start.
I’m retraining myself in a way to use my social networks more efficiently.
Previously I had all posts from this site feeding to my Face Book wall. What ended up was a bit of a disheveled mess, in which the posts would have to be clicked on to continue reading; and in some case like Song of the Day, you had to click out of the post anyways to see the video/hear the song. So it was a lot of unnecessary clicking, when really if I just posted a tiny URL directly to the original post as part of the status it would not only be less work for the reader but also more traffic generated to my blogs. So from now on new blog posts will be advertised via Twitter links (and thusly forwarded via Twitter app to Face Book).
I’m also going to attempt to steer myself away from boring tweets (i.e. eating lunch) and towards more in-depth explanations (i.e. if i post about lunch I’ll post what I’m having, maybe if it’s fancy to one of my cooking blogs, etc.) In other words something a bit more substantial and worth your time to actually bother clicking on/reading/etc.
It’s going to take a bit of practice, so bear with me, but hopefully the end result will worth all the effort.
Also you may notice that the side nav now has links to both my Face Book and Twitter pages, so if you’re not already freinding/following me.. well what are you waiting for? Get clicking!!!
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
Aug 8th
Unfortunately I don’t remember much of this dream, as I woke up just after it began.
Mainly I remember walking towards The Opera House with Steve. We were planning to see a show, but for some reason neither of us knew what it was. It was billed as a surprised improvisation or some such.
So we get there, find our seats get a couple of snacks… and then the opening notes to “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” come on. I’m very excited since I always had wished I could see it performed live!
I notice that for some reason the orchestra is hidden at first.. but as the actor comes on stage to sing Raels parts, the orchestra is unveiled. It is being led by Peter Gabriel himself!!! Unfortunately I only caught the first two songs…
Heroes Spoiler: Season 4 “Redemption” is almost at hand!
Aug 7th
I know it’s still 52 days to go, but here I am already with potential theories and spoilers.
But before we do all that I just wanted to apologize for slacking off at the end of last season. I totally had unfinished drafts and everything (maybe I’ll still even post them, we’ll see) but I dunno. I just lost my mojo/momentum and couldn’t seem to get it back. It wasn’t for lack of interest in the show, believe me. It was more I just took on too many projects at once and got burnt out.
As always with my Heroes blog. Seriously don’t read it if you don’t want to know. Not to toot my own horn or anything but I have like a 75% accuracy rating on being able to anticipate the plot-lines of the show. You’ve been warned!!!
Yesterday E! Online posted a huge spoiler article (original source: http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b138042_heroes_spoilerpalooza_triangles.html)
HeroesSpoilerpalooza: Triangles, Carnivals and Death
Thu., Aug. 6, 2009 12:45 PM PDT by Natalie Abrams and Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna
The premiere of Heroes is only a few short weeks away, and since the finale left us with so many questions, we thought we’d turn to the cast to get some answers, especially since season three and four’s storylines are so similar. “It feels like one long run-on season,” Hayden Panettiere tells us.
So who’s the new band of characters coming from the carnival? Who’s dying? Whose love story causes its star to shrug coyly at us? And what’s the scoop on what’s likely to be the hottest triangle we’ve ever seen on television? We have your answers…
The Triangle Twist: It’s not quite the love triangle you’re looking for, but more of a bromance. Adrian Pasdar tells us what he loves about Redemption: “The whole premise of Zachary [Quinto], myself and Greg [Grunberg] having an interesting triangle of behavior. In the process of Matt crushing Sylar and having my body become his, Sylar entered Matt, so there’s a soul that’s missing in me. It’s my own Nathan behavior that’s manifesting itself through Sylar. There’s a triangle that makes itself clear by the third episode.”
Sylar and Matt: So let’s take a look at all sides of the triangle, kicking off with the man who destroyed Sylar. Sadly, it just didn’t go over well. “When I did the mind transfer, it didn’t go clean,” says Greg. “Some of him stayed in me and he needs me. He’s looking for his body, he needs his body back and he’ll do anything to do that, including kidnapping my son.” Of course when you’ve got a bad man in you, he’s going to make you do bad things. “He’s kind of hanging around in my subconscious, making me do things that I don’t want to do. I have to catch myself. I can’t get rid of him, so I decide to ignore him. But you can’t ignore Sylar for very long.”
Sylar and Nathan: Moving on to the part of the triangle that’s actually sharing a body, Pasdar says he’s been working on picking up Quinto’s mannerisms. Don’t expect everyone to be in the dark about Nathan’s true identity for long, though. Says Adrian, “I think it’s clear from the outset of season four that something is going on, least of all to Nathan. He doesn’t become aware of it. I think he’s a step behind the audience. There’s just a split second for him in terms of understanding where he’s going and what might be wrong. He catches up though.”
Claire Goes Girl: We can’t talk about a triangle without mentioning the real action this season. Claire has a new roomie in Californication’s Madeleine Zima.“It’s a very interesting relationship,” says Hayden. “She hasn’t really had a relationship with someone that close—as a friend or anything else—since first season with her friend Zach (Thomas Dekker). So it’s a relationship I think that people are going to love and love to see us together. It’s a very interesting dynamic between the two of them.” As far as what Claire gets out of the friendship, Hayden tells us, “She gets a friend, a confidant, somebody she can confide in and not be alone with her secret and just be herself, somebody to help her along and be her buddy and her pal.” It turns romantic though, right? To which Hayden gave us a coy shrug, followed by admitting, “Yes, I did a coy shrug.”
The Big Bad Carnival: What’s a season of Heroes without some sinister force lurking out there? Hayden teases, “Carnival is the opposite of what the Company was. The Company wanted to hide us and our abilities. They wanted to keep it under wraps. The Carnival is the opposite where they want people to know about it.” However, don’t jump to conclusions whether they’re good or evil just yet. “Just when you think it’s safe, it’s not. Just when you think it’s evil, it turns out that we need them more than they need us,” spills Greg. And as for the leader of the gang, Samuel (Robert Knepper), James Kyson Lee says he just as bad as T-Bag from Prison Break: “I think so, but even more interesting.”
Need Some Romance? Speaking of Ando, he and Hiro (Masi Oka) are going into business this season. Says James, “Ando and Hiro are going to start up a new business venture. It’s going to keep us busy. Sept. 21 you will see a huge billboard. I am for hire, romance for hire.” Sadly, don’t expect the usual Hiro and Ando shenanigans because one of them is not long for life. Spills James, “Hiro has a bucket list because he’s dying. Ando is trying to change that, but we’ll see. There’s a whole theme of ‘Can you really mess with fate?’ in our show. Sometimes you can change history, sometimes you can’t.”
I originally read this over at ZacharyQuinto.comcommunity: where it was posted by fenraven. A very in-depth discussion followed. Some of it I’m going to reiterate here:
As asked by fenraven “I’m going to comment on my own post, because that weird stuff going on between Matt, Nathan, and Sylar doesn’t quite make sense to me. First, Nathan is DEAD. So how can he even be part of this so-called triangle?
And I also don’t remember that Matt did any mind transference with Sylar. He simply convinced Sylar to become Nathan, so how can a part of Sylar be in Matt’s mind?
I’ll reserve judgment on the baby kidnapping until I see how they handle that.
Zach mentioned at CC09 that he gets to climb out of a grave in the new season. I recently saw pictures from that scene on zachquinto.com. It looks very dramatic and all, but…why would he be climbing out of a grave? He was never put in one in the first place! He’s Nathan!”
I thusly responded “It seems worded badly as far as the Nathan thing. Nathan IS dead as you say. But obviously due to the way they left things Adrian Pasdar will be very much in focus as part of the storyline. I think what they meant to say is Nathan = Nathan/Sylar the hybrid. Because of the whole nature of the shape-shifting combined with Matt’s mind control: in some sense I assume at first Sylar (as we currently recognize him) will cease to exist in some manner; because the more immediate plot-line seems to be that he really does think he IS Nathan. But as evidenced in the above article that can only play out for so long. It sounds like inevitably the link between Matt and Nathan-Sylar’s mind begins to fray.. and whatever is left of Sylars consciousness begins to “infect” Matt.
I think the biggest bit that bothers me about all this is where is ZQ in this equation? If Sylar doesn’t remember who he is he has no reason to in fact switch back to his original form. I actually at some point almost suspected that ZQ might not even be returning to the show (esp. after I found out about the formation of Before the Door). But in the end what I guess they’re going to do is the whole reflective surfaces angle. Similar to how they used to do Niki/Jessica. Like Pasdar will walk by a mirror or a window and it will be Sylars reflection. At least until the infection happens.. and then I think we will begin seeing Sylar full-boat again wreaking havoc inside of Matt’s consciousness… or at least that’s my best educated guess.
As far as the kidnapping, I think they could manage to keep it sort of like Matt under the control of Sylar takes his own child and brings him somewhere, then Sylar releases him from his power so he can be made aware that he’s gone/missing. It’s less controversial than having some other character forcibly take the child… but we’ll see.
I feel like I now have to re-watch last season again to get a better visual on how everything played out in that last episode.
However much like Sylar’s burning on a pyre was metaphorical (in the sense it is a forced memory created by Matt to make Nathan-Sylars constructed memory more legitimate/believable) I believe the rebirth is similarly constructed as Matt’s connection/mind control begins to fail. If that makes any sense? (think of it like none of this is actually happening it’s all just images within Sylars mind being forced upon him).”
In addition to this some other notes of interest: the mention of Thomas Dekker. Now that Terminator:TSCC is canceled, I wonder if maybe we’ll be seeing him again at any point?
Also my most “way out there” theory still involves Sylar’s baby mama. This is assuming possible future season three still exists in any form. It’s probably too risque for NBC; but it has a bit of a South Park Angle to it (remember when Cartman’s mom was also his dad because of her being a hermaphrodite?). It’s been hinted repeatedly that Sylar undergoes an identity crises after the acquisition of the shape-shifting ability. We’ve already seen him pulling the “Norman Bates” by having conversations with himself as both Sylar and Virgina Gray. And to be honest there’s really no indication either way that when he shapeshifts into a female that all the girly bits aren’t there/and or function (because really the alternative is just… *shudder*). So the possibilities there just get kind of um.. weird. Could he get impregnated with shifted into someone else? Can he in fact make himself have a child(100% Sylar genetic material). Intriguing, mind boggling.. and probably not likely to happen in prime time. But still it had to be put out there.
THIS JUST IN: An addendum to the ZQC discussion – fenraven “Sylar’s burning on the pyre was NOT metaphorical. They burned the body of the original shapeshifter, who was still in Sylar’s form at the time of his death. So, real body, albeit not Sylar’s, and real burning.”
Hollywood Movie Kiss
Jul 13th
I know, I haven’t been too good about keeping this up. I have dreams, (obviously) more often then once every six months, but what seems to be happening lately is that they happen say Friday or Saturday night, and then by the time I get back to my computer to write them down on Monday I’ve forgotten most of the fine details. I’ve been trying to figure out a good way to make blog posts via my cellphone, so that I always have access, but so far nothing that looks as secure as I would like.
Anyway, so Friday night I had a dream. I guess you could say it was a bit of a retro dream, as it was occurring with a younger version of myself. Essentially, a college aged Ishtar, who as you may or may not have heard by now was not always the nicest person ever. I think there were four basic reasons behind these dreams:
- I just reconnected with quite a few old friends from that time period
- Smokie’s “Living next Door to Alice” was stuck in my head – as the dream plot seems to sort of follow the plot of that song to a degree (this is not the first time that song has gotten stuck in my head BTW, it also features in 3/15/09’s “Song of the Day“)
- We had a TBA Movie night planned the following day, in which we were showing the extended version of “That Thing You Do!”, many elements of which also appeared in the dream
- I had Chili’s Garlic Shrimp Again, which as we know from the previous Dream Journal entry “Weirdest Dreams… EVER!” on 4/14/08, is never really the best plan
This dream featured myself (obviously) Cybele Dupuis, and two other people named Mandi and Tom.
All four of us worked at an Amusement park, most likely Amalgam City amusement park; though if it was it was smaller than scale than usual, or the dream really only emphasised one very small section of the park. Mandi was in charge of that “Horse Race” game at the Midway; Cybele was a lifeguard at the swimming pool/water park; Tom was in charge of that “Ring the Bell” game at the Midway; and I was in charge of the batting cages (which was one stall over from Tom).
The premise is that it is was Cybele and my(that grammar seems so wrong) first day on the job. Tom and Mandi had already worked there for a while and were dating. Mandi and Tom were leaving at the end of summer to move across the country; Mandi was going to school out there and Tom I guess was supposed to keep her company.
Most of the time, during breaks or after work, I hung with Cybele. Sometimes Mandi, whom Cybele had become friends with. Actually Mandi was very nice, and in a way I guess you could say I sort of befriended her as well. However during the work hours, partially because he was the only other person to talk to (besides customers) and mostly because he was a very handsome blond-haired blue-eyed guy, I hung out/talked with Tom. It was all that sort of innocent but yet not kind of banter (much like the aforementioned film – scenes involving Guy & Faye) where you know you joke and laugh and there’s obviously chemistry but because of the pre-existing relationships it also has to skirt no further beyond that platonic level.
So this is sort of the bit where the song comes in: the main difference is that in the dream version the two people are already dating rather than the male part secretly being in love with the main female (Alice/Mandi). All the other bits like the main female moving away and the secondary female having a crush on the male and then getting her chance in the end all follow suit.
It got to be around the end of summer/the dream. it was Tom and Mandi’s last day working at the park before they were to move. Only Tom and Mandi had had a fight over something. She wouldn’t even tell Cybele what.. or at least not with me standing right there. I gave her a hug and everything, since I wouldn’t be seeing her again.. but it seemed sort of distant and cold. I put it out of my mind convincing myself it was either because we were not close friends, or maybe that it was just painful to her that she wouldn’t be seeing us again.
Cybele and I walked back across the park… chatting about stuff; mostly the thing with Mandi and Tom moving; and she kind of hints that she’s on to me. That you know I’d miss Tom more than I’d miss Mandi. I agree, but profess that although it was extremely hard for me to do so I did the best that I could not to interfere. Cybele joked that considering that I didn’t normally have qualms about stealing other people’s boyfriends, that yeah I had behaved myself pretty well.
Cybele and I sat down on a bench. I was wishing I had at least gotten a chance to say goodbye to Tom as well, when I saw him running by. I thought to myself “oh he’s probably trying to catch up with Mandi”, until he stopped dead turned around and then sat on my lap to give Cybele her “goodbye” hug. Meanwhile I was dying because hey, guy that I have a huge crush on sitting in my lap, woohoo! Or at least I was thinking that, until it got better and he turned to me and kissed me. And not like a sweet little goodbye kiss either, like a full-on Hollywood movie-scene kiss. The sort of kiss I suspect no real people on earth have ever had (or at least I haven’t) where everything is just perfect and magical. And then I woke up! Though I did come out of the dream with some sort of basic understanding that the fight had been about me, and that Tom didn’t end up leaving after all.
So after the fact, as I am writing the dream down for the journal in fact. I think the male may in fact be (in my minds eye) a more grown up version of my middle school crush, Tommy Hurford. For those that haven’t already heard this story; Tommy Hurford Was in only one of my classes (being a year above me in school) which was activity period. Activity period usually occurred last period on Fridays, and I think was just supposed to be a wind down before the weekend. You could choose from a number of different clubs/activities; and the one we were in happened to be Dungeons & Dragons. I pretty much crushed on him the entire year… and of course since I had to sit directly across from him at a small table throwing dice in his general direction, it gave me an excuse to sort of oogle him. It didn’t help that later in the school year he played the part of Frederic in the school musical “The Pirates of Penzance” (and had I known I totally would have tried out, I do a pretty mean Mabel if I do say so myself. Maybe Denise {my college roommate} may recall me belting out “Poor wand’ring one” now and again?). I’m not going to bother with a long synopsis of the musical/operetta, if you’ve never seen it; but to put it in a more modernist perspective: Frederic = swooniest pirate character ever (more-so than Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow) though it’s possible considering my first exposure to such, that my opinion may be biased.
It was the last day of class, which also happened to be a Friday, so we had activity period. It was kind of a cool day, as a special treat the DM bent the rules a bit and allowed us to have Gryphons for our campaign. Everyone was giddy for summer break. Tommy and I were having spectacularly good banter.. and then the period was over. We all said goodbye, and proceeded to clean out our lockers etc. Friends came by and gave hugs or whatever, or at least the ones you weren’t going to see later that day or that summer. Tommy came by and.. snatched my keys! Yes I know, how very middle school; showing a girl you’re interested by nicking her stuff! In a very bold move (for a seventh grader) he claimed he had put them down the front of his pants and that I was not to get them back unless I came and got them myself.
In my lifetime I have been both increments of brash& bold (like when I introduced myself to ex-BF Brian McGaunn by jumping into his lap in a club and/or similarly my ex-BF Mark Townshend in an even more direct manner, but I’m trying to keep it PG: so never-mind that) and excruciatingly shy (lusting after my ex-bf Gates for what seemed like an indeterminable time period before someone else finally convinced him he should ask me out). This occasion was the latter (though when replaying it over in my mind for the last 24 years I often wondered how it would have been the other way around). I turned a rather bright shade of scarlet and could hardly make words of one syllable for a good 20 minutes before Tommy finally, out of pity, returned my keys.
I spent a lot of that summer with my friend who conveniently lived two blocks from Tommy’s house . We’d ride bikes around the neighborhood and I’d always hope to catch a glimpse of him or better yet that he’d be outside and we’d “bump into” him and have a conversation. It never happened, but I didn’t fret about it too much, after all there was always next year at school.
Except there wasn’t. My parents moved from Reading to North Andover. They wanted me to start the school year at the new school, rather than start at one school and finish at another. So even though we hadn’t moved yet, my parents drove me to North Andover and I never saw Tommy again.
I know a lot of information there considering I’m not even sure the two Toms are supposed to be the same, but thinking back on the context of everything that happened the more and more likely it seems that unconsciously the real history was in fact giving the story a much better ending in my dream life. That’s sort of the thing that stinks about the “one that got away”. In your head it always plays out so much more romantically than it probably ever would have been in real life. You spend most of your life with the what if, despite knowing that time and/or personal difference or whatever would have indubitably made that relationship no more or less romantic than any other one that did get its moment in the sun.
Nintendo: Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me? (Fatal Frame IV)
Jul 1st
Well, I sent out my complaint letter to Nintendo regarding the non-release of Fatal Frame IV; for what little good it appeared to do. I wonder if they even read it at all, the response seemed somewhat boxed, and they state they STILL have no plans of releasing it. Hopefully you other people participating in the e-mail campaign will have more luck. FWIW, here’s a copy of my letter and response:

RE: Fatal Frame IV
To Whom It May Concern:
I just wanted to send along a note letting you know how disappointed I am at the announcement that Fatal Frame IV will most likely not be made available in the United States.
I have been a Nintendo customer for many years (since the original NES system in fact). It was always sad that your platforms never ran this series prior to the forth installment (admittedly I had to play them on another platform). But in my humble opinion is probably one of the best Horror genre games out there.
Some things I enjoy about Fatal Frame:
* Non-violent alternative to standard First-Person Shooters. Unlike the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series, you do not arm yourself with weapons, but rather the much less violent camera.
* Amplified Scare Factor: due to the fact that you are essentially fighting with the camera, the scare is much greater than the standard horror genre, based on the much more up-close approach to your subject matter via the magnification of the view finder.
* Engrossing characters and a taste of other cultures: Due to the fact that you rarely interact with any other characters other than the ones you are playing, you become much more attached to the character(s). I especially like that many times there is very little dialogue, making the game much more subdued (and therefore scary due to the quietness) rather than cluttering up the story with witty banter and auxiliary characters. I also like that it gives a very in-depth look into Japanese horror, folklore and architecture, but not as to a point at which I believe it is only of interest to people who hail from that country.
Though unrelated to the game in question, I thought you should be aware of some of the reasons the Wii is my preferred platform:
* I love the small design (makes it easy to travel, so I never have to be without it)
* Its intuitive menus (so much easier to adjust settings and download content than that other Sony system)
* The controller is one of the most fun and intelligent gadgets to come along in the history of gaming
* The platform has a wide selection of games ranging from those that the young can play (my three year old LOVES WiiMusic and making Mii’s) to older crowds (Zelda, Metroid, Trauma Center) and everyone in between (Mario, Animal Crossing).
So it was with great joy that I originally heard the news that FFIV was being developed for the Wii; only to find out nine months after it’s Japanese release that it may not be available at all.
I am aware that Nintendo’s base audience has always been aimed at family oriented fare. I ask you however to consider that there are many of us adults who buy your products that occasionally want to play something a little bit more grown up. It is for this reason I ask if you would please reconsider releasing Fatal Frame IV for U.S. distribution.
And thier response:
Hello,
Thank you for your recent email. We appreciate your patience as we researched this issue.
At this time, Nintendo has no plans to publish Fatal Frame. Your feedback regarding this game is important to us, so I’ll make sure to pass along your comments to the appropriate department. If we get further information about this title, we will post it to our website (www.nintendo.com), so make sure to keep checking for all the latest news as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
Mina Harris

Top 5: Vampires
Jun 28th
5. True Blood (TV Series): Ok, so the accents are cheesy, and there’s much more nudity than is probably necessary even in a night-time cable show. But I love it for the visual effects and the who-dunnit mystery aspect. Or at least until I find a new #5.
4. Bram Stoker’s Dracula: I complain about a lot of aspects of this film: Keanu Reeves, the fact that the vamp could go out int he sunlight. But one thing makes up for all of that, Gary Oldman. He’s totally the man, esp. in this film.
3. Interview with a Vampire: It stayed pretty close to the novel (incedentally the only book in the series I liked), it was pretty, is probably one of the few Tom Cruise films I actually enjoy. Not to mention budding actress Kirsten Dunst in one of her better roles.
2. The Lost Boys: A perrenial favorite from my youth. Kitchsy dialogue, sexy boy-toy vamps, geat soundtraack. It’s like “the Breakfast Club” of horror movies.
1. From Dusk ’til Dawn: A film that mixes all sorts of awesomeness: Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Vampires, Good Music, and Tom Freakin’ Savini! BOOYAH!
Top 5: Michael Jackson Songs
Jun 27th
Yeah he was a bit of a mess, but he made decent tunes… R.I.P. King of Pop
5. They Don’t Care About Us: I actually have to admit I forgot about this one until recently. It had a lot of controversy around it and never really got a ton of radio play, if I remember correctly. However it has an undeniably catchy street beat, and an important (albeit misunderstood) message about tolerance.
4. Beat It: Beacause it’s the first MJ song I remember liking as a kid. I only discovered “Off the Wall” and the Jackson 5, after the fact.
3. Smooth Criminal: I like it for the juxtaposition between it being a poppy dance number and the fact that’s it’s about a woman who’s been attacked/killed. Also Alien Ant Farm did that rockin’ cover version.
2. Scream (featuring Janet): possibly for the video (which is all with the PVC and the anime) but also because it’s catchy and easy to dance to.
1. Thriller: Well of course- great zombie horror video, catchy dance, Vincent Price. ‘Nuff Said.

SO I still maintain that on some level in the inner psyche he would have to be “reborn” in some manner for Nathan-Sylar to have any recollection of his true self. I still stand my my theory that this happens in his mind as a visual as the link between Matt and Sylar starts to wear thin.
It gets all very convoluted sometimes what with all the time-travel and alternate futures and now to add shapeshifting into the mix. But I kind of like it that way… makes me think a lot.”
